A washer usually won't spin because the load is unbalanced, the drain is clogged, the lid switch or door lock has failed, or a belt or motor coupler is worn. Rebalance the load and clean the drain filter first. If it still won't spin, call a technician.
Most Common Reasons a Washer Won't Spin
Unbalanced load
One heavy item, like a rug or comforter, can make the washer stop spinning to protect itself.
Water won't drain
Washers won't spin with water still in the tub. A clogged drain filter, kinked hose or failed pump can stop draining.
Lid switch or door lock failure
Top-loaders use a lid switch. Front-loaders use a door lock. If either fails, the washer won't spin for safety.
Worn belt or motor coupler
Belts stretch and couplers break over time, especially with big family loads.
Too many suds
Too much detergent, or non-HE soap in an HE washer, can stop the spin. You may see an Sd or SUD code.
Motor or control board problem
Less common, but a failing motor or board can stop the spin cycle.
Safe Washer Checks to Try First
- Open the washer and spread the clothes evenly. Add a few towels to balance a single heavy item.
- Check that the drain hose isn't kinked or pushed too far into the drain pipe.
- On front-loaders, clean the drain pump filter behind the small door at the bottom front. Keep towels nearby.
- Make sure the lid or door closes firmly. Listen for the lock to click.
- Unplug the washer for one minute to reset the controls.
- Run a Rinse and Spin cycle to test it.
Front-Load vs. Top-Load Spin Problems
Front-load washers are more likely to have door lock and drain filter problems. They also trap socks and coins in the pump filter. Top-load washers more often have lid switch, belt and coupler problems.
Codes can help. For example, a Whirlpool appliance repair customer may see F9 E1 for a slow drain, while an LG washer shows OE. The code points us to the right part.
When to Call for Washer Repair
- It still won't spin after you rebalance and clean the filter.
- You hear grinding, humming or loud banging.
