Dryer Runs But No Heat: What to Check First

Your dryer spins and hums, but clothes come out cold and wet. That's one of the most common dryer problems. The cause is often a small, low-cost part, but it's usually tied to airflow. Here's what to check and why the vent matters so much.

Quick answer

A dryer that runs but won't heat usually has a blown thermal fuse, a burned-out heating element (electric), or a weak igniter or bad gas valve coils (gas). A clogged vent is often what caused the part to fail. Clean the lint screen and check the vent first, then call a technician.

Why Dryers Stop Heating

Blown thermal fuse

This safety fuse blows when the dryer overheats. A clogged vent is the most common reason it overheats.

Burned-out heating element

Electric dryers use a coil element. It can break after years of use or from poor airflow.

Tripped breaker

Electric dryers use a double breaker. If half trips, the drum may turn but the heat won't work.

Weak gas igniter

Gas dryers use an igniter that glows to light the gas. A weak one can't open the gas valve.

Bad gas valve coils or flame sensor

These parts control the gas flow. If they fail, the burner won't stay lit.

Faulty thermostat

Cycling or high-limit thermostats can fail and stop the heat.

The Dryer Vent Connection

Most no-heat problems start with poor airflow. Lint builds up in the vent, heat gets trapped, and the thermal fuse blows to protect the dryer. If you just replace the fuse without clearing the vent, it often blows again.

Many Apex homes have second-floor laundry rooms with long vents to the roof. These clog faster. Our dryer vent cleaning service clears the full run.

Dryer Heat Checks You Can Do

  1. Clean the lint screen and wash it with soap if it looks clogged.
  2. Check your breaker panel. Reset the dryer breaker fully off, then on.
  3. Go outside and run the dryer. Feel the vent. You should feel strong, warm air.
  4. Pull the dryer out and make sure the duct behind it isn't crushed.
  5. For gas dryers, make sure the gas valve behind the dryer is open.

Warning Signs to Stop Using the Dryer

  • A burning smell.
  • The dryer cabinet feels very hot.
  • Clothes are hot but still damp.
  • Lint is piling up around the outside vent flap.

Lint is very flammable. If you notice these signs, stop using the dryer and get the vent cleaned before you run it again.
