Quick answer

An ice maker usually stops because it's switched off, the freezer is too warm, the fill tube is frozen, the water filter is clogged, or the water inlet valve has failed. Check the switch, the freezer temperature and the filter first.

Why Ice Makers Stop Making Ice

Ice maker is turned off

Many have a switch or a wire arm. If the arm is up or the switch is off, it won't make ice.

Freezer is too warm

Ice makers need about 0°F. If the freezer is warmer, ice won't form.

Frozen fill tube

Water can freeze in the small tube that feeds the ice maker, blocking new water.

Clogged water filter

An old filter slows water flow, making small cubes or none at all.

Failed inlet valve

The valve that lets water in can wear out or clog with minerals.

Bad ice maker module

The motor or control in the ice maker itself can fail.

Ice Maker Checks You Can Do

  1. Make sure the ice maker switch is on and the wire arm is down.
  2. Check that the freezer is at or near 0°F.
  3. Replace the water filter if it's more than 6 months old.
  4. Look behind the ice maker for ice blocking the fill tube.
  5. Make sure the water valve behind the fridge is fully open.
  6. Wait 24 hours after a change. New ice can take time.

Small, Hollow or Clumped Ice

Small or hollow cubes usually mean low water flow from a clogged filter or weak valve. Clumped ice often means the freezer is too warm or the door isn't sealing, so ice partly melts and refreezes.

In homes on well water, like many around New Hill and Willow Spring, minerals can clog valves faster. A good filter and yearly cleaning help.

When to Call for Ice Maker Repair

Call a technician if the ice maker still won't work after these checks, if water is leaking, or if the dispenser won't push ice out. We test the valve, fill tube, module and freezer temperature. See our ice maker repair page.

Some brands have known ice maker issues. Many Samsung appliance repair calls involve frost around in-door ice makers, which we fix often.
